Dan Roberge
Hi.
Matt Mello
Hey. How are you?
Dan Roberge
I'm pretty good. Now, we've known each other for a long time, but now you're somewhere new. Where are you working right now?
Matt Mello
A great question. Thank you for having me. So today, I'm with a company called PainChek. And PainChek is an Australian based company that's developed an AI facial scanning tool that allows you to better assess pain in people that can't verbalize on their own. So think about people living with dementia. Clinical care teams can't figure out what's going on. So this AI scans the face for three seconds, walks the condition through a very quick binary assessment, and then they're able to better understand what kind of pain they're in.
Dan Roberge
How does that work?
Matt Mello
So, great question. So it's basically you can use an iPhone or Android device, or a tablet scans the resident's face in three seconds. Everybody here in this room has the same nine micro muscles in their face that are indicative of pain. People with dementia and brain impairment have lost the ability to fake pain. Like, I could bang my knee right now on the desk and plow through it. You know? But they lose that ability, so the pain comes out in their face. So the AI scans their face, and then the nurse clinician will do a binary assessment on the app very quickly. Was Matt moaning? It's all yes or no questions. The entire operation takes 90 seconds, and they get a notification at the end. Are we in mild, moderate or severe pain? And then it uploads into PointClick Care as a process.
Dan Roberge
I was going to ask what are the integrations, because you'd want those notes. And so okay. And you can use any type of device?
Matt Mello
Any type of device, yeah. So most people are using either a mobile device that they carry in their pocket, or they might be using an iPad mini. So each of the caregivers that are using it would be registered, and would have an email and a password. But once you're in, you only have to remember a four digit Pin code, because everybody forgets the password, and everybody shares passwords, which is the worst thing to do in the cybersecurity world. Or they can have it on an iPad, and everybody just logs individually.
Dan Roberge
Okay. And so how do you set up in the first place? Like do you do kind of a baseline scan of everybody for all your residents in the dementia ward? Is that how you would do it?
Matt Mello
So you can actually use it for every single patient, because embedded in there is something called the numeric rating system. And that's like if you go to the doctor, let's say you've been out skiing and you twisted your knee. You go see the doctor, and then you'll say, on a scale of 1 to 10, how is your pain? And you'll say, an eight. So people that can verbalize their pain, they can also track their pain in the app, which again would upload into PCC. So they don't have to wait until the end of their shift to go back into PointClick Care and put that numerical number into PCC.
Dan Roberge
That's what you need. You know, it's there's a lot of data entry that goes just on a day to day basis into PCC and other software. But having these tools that feed it. Yes. Based on real data. That's amazing.
Matt Mello
Yeah. It is very easy to use, and train you real quick. And the whole process takes the 90 seconds. So our clients are using it as a continuation of their workflow. So everybody in the system. Because what you'll find out if you go to any facility, two clinicians will do a pain assessment. And it's a coin toss if they're going to get the same results. And it's only because we've been trained differently in doing it for so long. Now with PainChek, it takes it from 50 percent to 85 percent.
Dan Roberge
Wow. Consistency. And you find there is that consistency?
Matt Mello
Yes.
Dan Roberge
Incredible. So now what's your background? What makes you capable of talking about this?
Matt Mello
Yeah. So I've been in the senior care side, I like to tell people like right out of high school. I worked at a pharmacy, you know, all during high school, straight out of college. I used to be a respiratory therapist. That's probably something you didn't know.
Dan Roberge
I didn't
Matt Mello
And then I jumped into medical sales. And so I've been in the senior care sales side for well over 35 years. I don't say the exact number because people know already I'm old enough.
Dan Roberge
So where do people find out about this product? And it's called PainChek?
Matt Mello
It's called PainChek. Simply go to PainChek.com. And remember there's no C in pain check. There's only one C. It's C-H-E-K. So PainChek.
Dan Roberge
Sounds good. Well, thank you very much. That was amazing.
Matt Mello
It's great to see you again. We've got a lot of great times together, and it was great to see you.
Dan Roberge
Thank you to you too.
